What is a Favicon and How to Use it?

The word Favicon comes from ‘favorite icon’. It is the tiny image that sits next to your web URL after bookmarking it. You can call it a way to make your blog stand out from the rest. It provides a visual identification to your web page.

How to Create a Favicon?

  • Create a 16X16 pixel picture
  • Save it as favicon.ico image in your server’s root directory
  • Your Favicon is ready to use with any WP blog on any server that supports root directories.
  • To create such an image, tools like GIMP, Photoshop or any other efficient graphics editing software come very handy.
  • There are various online services such as Faviconer.com or Dynamic Drive which can be used to create your free Favicon.
  • Download the Favicon to your computer.

How to Install Favicon to Your WordPress?

  • Use an FTP client to upload your favicon.ico image to your theme’s main directory
  • Upload a copy of the same to your website’s main directory
  • Now the Favicon will appear in your subscriber’s feedreaders
  • Go to the Theme Editor in your WP Admin Panel
  • Select the Header(header.php) file to edit it
  • Overwrite or insert this code (<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”<?php bloginfo(‘stylesheet_directory’); ?>/favicon.ico” />) under the <head> HTML tag and Save
