3 Benefits of using .ico over .png or .gif in Favicons

Except when creating Favicon with a transparent background, we save Favicons as a 16X16 pixels square image saved as favicon.ico. There are several reasons why.

1. Compatibility with major browsers – Most browsers, even IE 5.0, back the .ico format.

2. Avoid 404 errors – Most modern browsers of the likes of Chrome 4, IE8, Safari 4, Firefox 3.5 and Opera 10 prefer the usage of .ico extension with favicons. If the condition is not met, your website visitors might get a “404 not found” or a similar error.

3. Higher Capacity A file with .ico format can hold several icons, making it redundant to have multiple files for 16×16 and 48×48 ones.
